MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS COURSE

An introductory course designed to increase mental health awareness and give an understanding of how to look after well being and challenge stigma.

This course raises awareness of mental health. It covers:

  • What mental health is and how to challenge stigma
  • A basic knowledge of some common mental health issues
  • An introduction to looking after your own mental health and maintaining wellbeing
  • Confidence to support someone in distress or who may be experiencing a mental health issue

Everyone who completes the course gets:

  • A certificate of attendance to say you are Mental Health Aware
  • A manual to refer to whenever you need it
  • A workbook including a helpful toolkit to support your own mental health

Cost MHFA England value this course at £325 per person. However, Racing Welfare is heavily subsidising this training and is offering it to the racing industry for £95 per head. Please note this course is only available to people working in the British Thoroughbred Horseracing and Breeding industries.

York Racecourse

The Racing Foundation will be hosting its annual conference on Thursday 2nd October 2025 at York Racecourse.

 

The conference gathers stakeholders from across horseracing to build understanding and prompt collaboration around some of the industry’s key challenges. All those working in or on the periphery of the sport are welcome to attend. The jockey coaches, rider coaches and RSDP coaches who attend the days find the following useful, apart from learning about the sport of Pony Racing.

Train the Trainers CPD is for experienced and confident coaches who are coaching or are keen to coach Pony Racing. The CPD is aimed at Accredited Pony Club coaches who wish to develop their knowledge of Pony Racing, as well as existing PRA Pony Racing coaches, RSDP coaches and Jockey coaches.

It is expected that all those attending the session have the intention of using the skills learnt on the day to develop Pony Racing in Pony Club Branches/Centres and/or with the Pony Racing Authority.

The purpose of Train the Trainers is to:

–        Provide an introduction to Pony Racing including the rules and regulations of The Pony Club and PRA Pony Racing

–        Describe how The Pony Club, the Pony Racing Authority, Racing to School and Careers in Racing work together in the ‘Pathway into Racing through Pony Racing’

–        Discuss the tack, rider PPE and equipment required for Pony Racing

–        Demonstrate how unmounted activities can be used to improve technique, fitness and balance

–        Show how to coach a group of riders/members in an arena and on the gallops

–        Update current Pony Racing coaches on changes within the sport

–        Share good practice

  • Emergency First Aid at Work – Equestrian Specific

    The equestrian specific Emergency First Aid at Work Course is essential for professionals riding and handling horses.

    The Medi-K Emergency First Aid at Work Course is held at locations across the UK and is delivered over one day. Designed for racing staff who wish to improve their knowledge and understanding of assessing an incident, managing a patient who is wounded and bleeding, in shock or unresponsive, this HSE compliant course provides a complete overview of first aid procedures.

  • The qualification has been designed to address the most commonly faced first aid scenarios, including:

    • Understanding the role and responsibilities of an emergency first aider
    • Recovery positions
    • Airway management
    • Managing rider specific injuries, including head injuries and skullcap removal
    • Safe removal of a riders back protective
    • Recognition and treatment of damage to upper limb injuries
    • Soft tissue injuries
    • Minor injuries and bandaging
    • Lyme Disease
    • Hypothermia and hyperthermia
    • AED/ defibrillator use
    • Accident reporting

Cost:

The Emergency First Aid at Work Course – Equestrian Specific is partially funded, leaving a £60.00 per person non-refundable contribution to pay. Refreshments & lunch are provided.

The qualification is awarded by Medi-K Training, a leading awarding organisation in the first aid for equestrians. Delivered in accordance with currently accepted first aid best practice, and satisfies the requirement of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. The qualification is valid for three years.

  • WHAT IS THE 1 4SPORT LEVEL 3 AWARD IN WORKFORCE MENTORING IN THE RACING AND THOROUGHBRED INDUSTRY?

    The Level 3 Award in Workforce Mentoring is a nationally recognised qualification designed specifically for those mentoring in the workplace. It is available to anyone who works in the Racing and Thoroughbred industries, regardless of their role or vocational area. Mentors play a significant part in developing their colleague’s working potential, often in an informal way, but always with the intention of supporting and guiding others to be the best they can be.

    This qualification aims to standardise this industry-wide role and create a community of trained, qualified mentors who will share good practice and have a leading role in the professional development of the industry’s workforce.

    WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

    Level 3 Award in Workplace mentoring, awarded by 1st4sport, has been identified as a particularly suitable qualification for the racing and Thoroughbred breeding industries. It can be delivered within the context of all roles within the racing industry. It comprises of two units which are:

    Unit 1: The mentoring role. This unit covers the theoretical aspects of the role and responsibilities of the mentor, the techniques and skills required during the mentoring process and reflecting on the mentoring role.

    Unit 2: Undertaking the mentoring in the workplace. This unit covers the practical aspect of planning and delivering mentoring. You will be required to mentor at least one person for a minimum of six hours.

    THE LEARNING PROGRAMME

    The training for this award is a blend of face to face, on-line and eLearning. The initial session will be a full day of face-to-face training. This is followed by four or five shorter on-line sessions. During the course you will be required to:

    Complete several eLearning courses on Racing2Learn to consolidate your understanding of mentor related subject areas. Complete a learner portfolio (workbook)Provide evidence of practical mentoring. The total guided learning time will be a minimum of 21 hours. You should be prepared to undertake a minimum of 6 hours of mentoring with additional time allowed for planning and reviewing the mentoring process. Time should also be allowed to complete the portfolio and the eLearning courses. Full guidance and support will be given, with the opportunity to additional face to face sessions and a mid-term review. The only cost you will have to pay is for the qualification registration, which is £55.

    People management relates to a range of skills and behaviours that managers and senior staff require to enable them to be effective leaders.

    The Introduction to People Management Course is held at locations across the UK and is delivered over one day.  The course is interactive and encourages attendees to share experiences and challenges.

  • During the course, delegates learn skills including

    Communication: How to communicate effectively, both on a one-on-one and in group settings

    Motivation: How to motivate team members to achieve desired goals

    Delegation: How to delegate tasks effectively, allowing team members to reach their full potential

    Conflict Resolution: How to resolve conflict effectively and maintain a positive work environment

    TheIntroduction to People Management Course is designed for managers and senior staff of all levels, from recently appointed managers to experienced managers. Some of the benefits of people management training are:
